Google’s Inactive Account Manager: How It Works and WhyYou Need It

Inactive Account Manager lets you decide in advance what happens to your Google account — Gmail, Drive, Photos, YouTube, and more — if it goes unused for a period of time you choose (from 3 to 18 months).

How it works:

1. Set your timeout period.

2. Choose up to 10 trusted contacts.

3. Decide what each contact can access — you can give different people access to different services.

4. Optionally, have your account automatically deleted after the process completes.

Before the timeout triggers, Google sends you reminders by email and text, so an extended vacation won’t accidentally set things off. If you never respond, your chosen contacts are notified and given access to exactly what you specified.

This matters because Google’s standard process for a deceased user’s account requires a death certificate, legal documentation, and can still take months with no guarantee of access.
